United Nations University

The United Nations University (UNU) is the academic arm of the United Nations (UN). It bridges the academic world and the UN system. Its goal is to develop sustainable solutions for current and future problems of humankind in all aspects of life. Through a problem-oriented and interdisciplinary approach it aims at applied research and education on a global scale. UNU was founded in 1973 and is an autonomous organ of the UN General Assembly. The University comprises headquarters Tokyo, Japan, and more than a dozen Institutes and Programmes worldwide.

The Institute spearheads UNU's research and capacity development activities in the broad interdisciplinary field of risk and vulnerability including knowledge-based adaptation and resilience strategies.

UNU-EHS addresses the risk and vulnerability aspects of human security and the consequences of complex environmental hazards for sustainable development. The work of UNU-EHS helps to improve the in-depth understanding of the cause effect relationships to find ways to reduce risks and vulnerabilities. The Institute supports policymakers and decision makers with evidence-based research and information.

    UNU-EHS actively involved in ICLEI Resilient Cities conference

    From 12 to 15 May 2012, the 3rd Global Forum on Urban Resilience & Adaptation takes place in Bonn, Germany. Within the scope of the conference, UNU-EHS organizes both a session on risk and vulnerability assessment and the 11th Bonn Dialogues as special event in addition to facilitating the Young Researchers Forum.     Public symposium: "Cities: Drivers of development - drivers of risk?"

    Being a special event of the ICLEI 3rd Global Forum on Urban Resilience and Adaptation (12-15 May 2012, Bonn), the 11th Bonn Dialogues event will address drivers of development and risk as well as potential disaster risk management strategies towards natural hazards in urban areas with a special focus on flooding.   3. UNU-EHS contributes to IPCC SREX report

    5 April 2012. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has released its Special Report on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation (SREX). UNU-EHS scientist PD Dr.-Ing. Jörn Birkmann contributed to Chapter 2 "Determinants of Risk: Exposure and Vulnerability" as lead author. 220 authors from 62 countries worked on the report; more than 18,000 review comments were received and addressed. |Read more
