LAKARI aims at developing knowledge-based recommendations regarding future science and practice agendas in the field of disaster risk management. Commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in the context of the envisaged internatinalization of disaster risk management activities, the project identifies a set of potential priority countries and topics in Africa and Asia.

The analysis is based on a comparative analysis of prevailing levels of disaster risk, existing national risk reduction and prevention strategies, and possible research and development (R&D) partnerships. Under the lead of UNU-EHS, the project consortium consists of three further academic partners, including the University of Stuttgart’s Institute of Spatial and Regional Planning (IREUS), the University of Applied Sciences (TH Köln) and the University of Wuppertal (BUW).

Next to coordinating the consortium, UNU-EHS leads work packages 3 “Identification of target countries” and 4 “Integration of results”. Within WP3, UNU-EHS is responsible for WP3.1 “Analysis of risk potentials”. This includes an analysis of hotspots of disaster risk based on the comparative spatial and statistical analysis of leading global risk indices as well as a profound analysis of the status of i) the implementation of international frameworks/agreements (UNISDR, UNFCCC), ii) the ratification of national disaster risk reduction strategies, regulations and laws, and iii) potential entry points for collaboration in the identified target countries.
