The GlobeDrought project aims at developing, testing and implementing a global drought information system for comprehensively characterizing drought events and their impact on water resources, crop productivity, food trade and the need for international food aid. Drought risk will be characterized in a spatially explicit manner by considering the components drought hazard, exposure and vulnerability. The analyses at global scale will be complemented by more detailed analyses for heavily drought affected regions (incl. South Africa, Zimbabwe, etc.).

Within the interdisciplinary consortium, UNU-EHS leads eight of the 18 work packages and will be responsible for the analysis of vulnerabilities and risks with regard to meteorological, hydrological and agronomic droughts at global and regional levels, including the assessment of vulnerability dynamics at a global level. Results of the regional risk assessments will be cross-validated using loss and damage information. In addition, UNU-EHS leads multiple activities related to communication, capacity building and outreach. This includes the organization of stakeholder workshops, the development of educational material (incl. e-courses, webinars, and online lectures), and the establishment of a community of practice.

GlobeDrought is one out of 12 collaborative projects funded under the “Global Resource Water (GROW)” funding scheme in the framework program FONA (Research for Sustainability) of the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) which aims at contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (notably SDG 6).
