On 13 September 2022, the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 77) opened. However, this week a high-level debate kicks off and runs from 20 to 26 September. UNGA 77 is themed “A watershed moment: transformative solutions to interlocking challenges”, underlining the shared root causes of crises and disasters. As we become increasingly connected across the planet, so do the risks we share.
The recently published UNU-EHS 2021/2022 Interconnected Disaster Risks Report indicates that through root causes such as greenhouse gas emissions and global demand pressures disasters are interconnected with each other and with all of us. While only one of the Sustainable Development Goals mentions disaster risk, the report explains how understanding the underlying systems of interconnectivity can help put the right solutions in place to prevent disaster impacts, or in some cases, prevent disasters altogether.
