At the invitation of the National Institute of Disaster Management in India (NIDM), UNU-EHS will participate in a conference called “Science and Technology Research-Policy-Practice Interface for Climate Risk Management – Implementing Prime Minister’s Agenda 10.”

UNU-EHS Expert Dr. Joerg Szarzynski will participate in the Special Panel Discussion Session on “Green Growth & Sustainability Strategies” on 27th August 2020, at 2:00 p.m. India Standard Time (10:30 a.m. CET). The panel discussion will focus on strategic and innovation issues for sustainability integration into disaster risk reduction (DRR) along with environment, nature conservation and business sustainability. UNU-EHS will contribute knowledge on innovative applications of earth sciences that will facilitate sustainability integration in DRR.

The conference will be attended by experts and officials from the Indian government, as well as agencies from the UN, NGOs, implementing agencies, academia and research institutes, and professionals in the field of climate and disaster resilience and sustainable development. This initiative will develop a knowledge network, and come up with a roadmap for concerted coordinated planning and actions for resilience and sustainability through climatic adaptive planning processes in India. The conference takes place 25-27 August, 2020.

Globally and in India, there has been a paradigm shift in Disaster Management, from a ‘response and relief-centric’ approach to ‘prevention-preparedness and mitigation-centric approach’, which calls for holistic, integrated and inclusive strategies with effective use of science and technology interventions and innovations from across a range of disciplines. In the Prime Minister’s 10 point agenda, item 05 focuses on leveraging technologies and science for disaster risk reduction.
