Representatives of 197 countries have gathered in Bonn, Germany, home to the United Nations Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS), for a new round of climate change negotiations as work to implement the 2015 Paris Agreement continues.
The talks, which will run from May 8 to 18, come at a critical juncture in climate negotiations and will serve as a litmus test for how countries take forward the landmark Paris deal, especially considering that in many countries international cooperation on defining global challenges is in reverse.
Representatives of UNU-EHS will be participating in the talks, presenting their latest research at side events and generally informing debate and negotiations throughout the 10 days.
The Munich Climate Change Initiative (MCII), which is hosted at UNU-EHS, is co-organizing a side event, entitled ‘Coping with climate change in SIDS: aligning adaptation strategies with comprehensive climate risk management’ together with GIZ. At the event, MCII will highlight how the tool climate risk insurance can be integrated into wider climate risk management solutions to help vulnerable people in developing countries better adapt to the impacts of climate change.
On Thursday 11 May, Dr. Robert Oakes and Dr. Cosmin Corendea will be presenting their latest research into climate change and migration in the Pacific region at a second UNU-EHS special side event. Speaking alongside experts from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the University of Liege, Dr. Oakes will discuss mobility and population concentrations in the SIDS, while Dr. Corendea will present his work which focuses on establishing a regional framework on migration and displacement in the Pacific.
This research from UNU-EHS is particularly relevant given that Fiji will be officially hosting COP23, the global climate summit, in November, also set to take place in Bonn.
