Dr. Matthias Garschagen, head of Vulnerability Assessment, Risk Management and Adaptive Planning at UNU-EHS, will be speaking at a special side event at HABITAT III – the third meeting of the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development, to be held in Quito, Ecuador.

Titled ‘Climate change and urban disaster resilience’, the event will be held on the final day of the four-day conference, 20 October, from 8:30am to 11.30am local time, in One UN Pavilion Room B.

Dr. Garschagen will be speaking on urbanization and climate change, with a focus on how these two global megatrends are colliding and affecting urban risk levels. Alongside him, input will come from fellow scientists, practitioners and policymakers. Between them, the expert panel will offer answers to the main questions of urban sustainability, including what future urban risk trends are to be expected, particularly in countries with rapid urbanization and high exposure to natural and climatic hazards.
