Politico Europe recently published an article on vulnerable nations’ concerns about climate risk insurance. It features expert Soenke Kreft, the head of the Munich Climate Insurance Initiative hosted by UNU-EHS. He acknowledges the role of insurance in enhancing global resilience against climate change and highlights genuine demand for insurance from vulnerable countries.
Kreft credits the V20 forum for supporting the Global Shield initiative, but emphasizes that insurance is just one component among many to address loss and damage, underscoring its limited scope. He recognizes the usefulness of microinsurance for climate-vulnerable sectors like agriculture, citing India’s experiment with a heatwave microinsurance policy for self-employed women.
