UNU-EHS migration expert Dr. Robert Oakes recently gave an interview to Metro International on environmental migration, what is causing it and whom it affects. It was published in several Latin American countries, for example Mexico, Equador, Colombia, Guatemala and Puerto Rico. In respect to recent migration from Central America to the U.S., Oakes said it is impossible to separate environmental and economic reasons: “Many so-called economic migrants are moving because their farms or food prices have been affected by drought.”
