When investigating situations of environmental stress, gender analyses carried out in South Asia tend are inclined to portray women as victimized and passive. However, the author argues that there may be a blindness to women’s ability to influence their own destiny, causing women to be overlooked as active agents in environmental migration literature.
In 1950 two-thirds of the world’s population lived in rural areas, while one-third lived in urban areas. By 2050, that proportion will be reversed. It is forecast that by mid-century, cities will be home to some 6.3 billion people – a staggering 2.4 billion more urban inhabitants than today.
